Crespi of Encino took another step forward in its wrestling resurgence Friday night, producing a third consecutive Mission League team titlist, six more individual league champions and 11 individual postseason qualifiers overall in the league finals at Crespi.
The Celts also secured that all-important return trip to the Southern Section team championship, keeping alive their hopes of following the school's Div. X football titlists in a bid for back-to-back section crowns.
"We know we're going to have to work extra hard this week to be ready," said two-sport Crespi star Martin Ciccolini, who led the area with 11 interceptions during an all-state season with the football team and provided the title-clinching points for the wrestling team Friday night.
Ciccolini's victory at 142 pounds secured Crespi's win over league runner-up Alemany of Mission Hills, ensuring that coach Mike Odman's Celts would finish league undefeated.
Alemany, which lost only to Crespi (51-28) in the dual-meet phase of league play, won its first two matches in Friday's round-robin competition to set up a rematch that could have secured a title tie for the Indians.
Crespi's 50-23 victory in that rematch, following round-robin wins over Chaminade of West Hills (58-18) and Harvard-Westlake of Studio City (60-15), gave the Celts the league's No. 1 berth and probable top seeding in today's Div. VI dual meet championship at San Marino.
Alemany advances as the second-place Mission League team with the Celts, who have been ranked No. 1 in Div. VI all season -- five years after resurrecting their wrestling program.
Alemany qualified nine individuals for the Feb. 18-19 Coastal Conference individual championships at Edison High in Huntington Beach, where Kenny Cachola (105) Blaise Pacol (121), Jimmy Prince (127) will compete as league champions -- Prince and Cachola as multiple champions and Pacol as league lower-weight MVP.
Crespi's individual postseason qualifiers include league champions Luis Munoz (114), Ciccolini (142), Sean Ellis (147), Lamar Reed (154), Conrad Agajanian (173) and heavyweight Sione Fua.
Munoz, Ciccolini and Fua each won a third league title and team wins leader Agajanian went 3-0 to earn his first title, finishing regular season with a 38-7 record, including forfeits.
Agajanian is looking forward to the postseason, now that Crespi is finally close to full strength with the late addition of football player Daryl Fields, whose only meet of the season earned him league runner-up honors and an individual postseason berth at 191 pounds.
"We've made it to the quarterfinals the last two years," Agajanian said. "Hopefully, we'll do better this time. We'll see how far we can go. We're wrestling well now."
Other individual league champions were Chaminade's Jordan Winezveg (132), Adam Mazeo (217) and middle-weight MVP Ryan Sobati (162) and Harvard-Westlake's Mathew Katz (137) and upper-weight MVP Kenji Porter (191).
Porter, especially, is expected to go far in the postseason. After qualifying for state at 215 pounds last year, he has gone 38-4 at 191 this season, reaching the final of seven tournaments and winning three of them.
