2005 CIF Champions (11-3)
LOMPOC - After Josh Morgan broke through Lompoc tacklers for another hard-earned first down, Crespi's only concern in Friday's Southern Section Div. X championship game was finding a jug full of water.
Morgan's first down with less than two minutes remaining essentially clinched Crespi's 24-14 victory. The Celts earned their second consecutive Div. X championship.
They way they did it was a stellar defensive effort and clock-eating runs from Morgan and quarterback Matt Wabby.
Lompoc gained only 141 yards, and its offense only had one lengthy scoring drive. Crespi's defense allowed Lompoc only 32 second-half yards.
Morgan ran for 95 yards on 26 carries. Wabby carried 11 times for 53 yards. Most of their runs were up the middle, allowing Crespi to kill time. Crespi's 11-play scoring drive - that ended in a 8-yard touchdown run by Morgan - took up more than seven minutes in the third quarter and ended on the first play ofthe fourth.
It was the second straight season Crespi won a playoff game at Lompoc. Crespi snapped the Braves' 23-game winning streak with a 25-8 victory in last year's semifinals on the way to the 2004 title.
"This is our home field," Morgan said. "That's how we play."
Morgan's score with 11:54 remaining made it a three-possession contest. Lompoc had a glimmer of hope when Sean Carpio returned a Crespi fumble to the Celts 3-yard line. The drive ended with a 1-yard scoring run by Jakob Sims to put Lompoc down 10 points with 7:20 remaining. It wouldn't score again, though.
Lompoc's Joseph Scott rushed for a team-high 75 yards on 14 carries.
Crespi scored easily on the game's opening drive, moving the ball 35 yards on seven plays. Morgan capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.
Lompoc scored five minutes later on its second possession. Tim Ochoa completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Sam Ruiz. It was the Braves' only first-half score.
Crespi struggled offensively for the 13 minutes following its first touchdown. The Celts gained only 17 yards on their next three possessions. Then Crespi got some help when Lompoc fumbled a Crespipunt.
The Celts recovered the ball on the Lompoc 42. Then Lompoc was penalized 15 yards for pass interference on the second play ofthat drive, which ended with a 28-yard field goal by Brandon Ibarra. His kick gave Lompoc a 10-7 lead with 7:26 remaining in the first half.
Matt Gray caught a 17-yard pass from Wabby with one minute remaining in the first half to give Crespi a 17-7 halftime lead. That drive started on the Lompoc 36 after the Crespi defense held Lompoc to minus-10 yards on the previous drive.
Friday's game pitted the winners of the past three Southern Section Div. X titles. Lompoc was the 2002 and 2003 Div. X champs.
Lompoc suffered tragedy earlier this year when three players were involved in a Halloween car accident. Kicker Brice Fabing and offensive lineman Michael Terrones Jr. were killed in the wreck; Darrell Solorio recently emerged from a coma. The three players' numbers were painted on the field earlier in the season. Fabing and Terrones Jr.'s parents were presented with commemorative letterman jackets before Friday's game.
