2006 PAC 5 Playoffs (6-5)
Article Last Updated:11/04/2006 12:28:26 AM PST
All Crespi needed to dismantle Loyola of Los Angeles on Friday night was the powerful 1-2 punch of Austin Shanks and E.J. Woods.
Shanks ran for 179 yards on 20 carries and scored once, and Woods ran for 145 yards on eight carries and scored threetouchdowns in a 41-7 rout over visiting Loyola.
The Celts had 377 rushing yards.
Loyola and Crespi don't have much of a rivalry these days since they don't play each other often.
Friday's game was the first the two teams played in Encino since 1985. Crespi made sure it was enjoyable for its fans.
It was a big victory, but immediately following the game, Crespi coach Jeremiah Ross wasn't basking in it. He already was talking about the big game next week against Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks.
"We've got to keep going," Ross told his players. "Don't lose that edge."
Shanks never did.
The Celts (6-3) improved to 2-0 in the Serra League because of their ability to hit the outside corner. Woods had several big runs, including an 82-yarder for a touchdown that gave Crespi a 21-0 lead.
"They're a good team," Loyola coach Jeff Kearin said. "We're just not executing well. That's the frustrating part. We could not stop
anything they did. I don't know what they were doing to get outside as much as they did."
Shanks ran up the middle, outside and all over the field. It seemed too easy.
"We never thought it would be that easy," Shanks said. "We still prepared hard, but we thought it might be easier because of what Notre Dame did to them.
Loyola (4-5) fell to 0-2 in league. The loss almost assured that the Cubs won't make the playoffs for the first time in 26years. Loyola has to win its final game, and even then its only hope is an at-large bid.
Last year, Loyola made the playoffs on a coin flip and won the Southern Section Div. I title.
Loyola put together a couple of short drives but missed field goals of 48 and 54 yards. The Cubs, who have used three quarterbacks this year, weren't able to get anything going with Kelly O'Brien. Kearin put Conor Hearn in during the third quarter, but Hearn quickly threw an interception.
Hearn, however, led Loyola to its only scoring drive, which resulted in a 9-yard touchdown run from Reed Watne.
The Celts had 474 total yards.
