2006 PAC 5 Playoffs (6-5)
COSTA MESA - Austin Shanks wouldn't go as far to say that Crespi of Encino would have come out on top against Edison of Huntington Beach if the Celts were at full strength Friday night.
Injuries certainly didn't help visiting Crespi in a 35-13 loss in a Southern Section Pac-5 first-round playoff game at Orange Coast College.
Crespi (6-5), winner of the past two Southern Section Division X titles, was without quarterback Kevin Prince, who broke his collarbone in a loss to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the regular-season finale last Friday, and receiver D.J. Holt, who severely sprained his ankle while tripping over a tarp in practice Monday.
Running back E.J. Woods, the team's second-leading rusher, played sparingly because of an ankle sprain he suffered against Notre Dame.
Shanks shouldered his load in the starters' absence. The junior rushed for 127 yards on 23 carries, including a 61-yard touchdown.
The junior also scored on an 11-yard interception return in the first quarter.
In all, Shanks, who had twocatches for 48 yards, accounted for 175 of Crespi's 211 yards of offense.
"I am not going to say that we lost just because we didn't have Kevin," Shanks said. "But if
we had Prince, it would have been a big difference. With D.J. there, it would have been even better."
Holt, who wore his No. 3 jersey and watched on the sidelines in a walking boot, and Shanks shared a long embrace at midfield after the game.
Crespi coach Jeremiah Ross shook his head in disbelief when asked about the impact of the injuries as he watched his team shake hands with Edison players after the game.
"You saw what happened tonight," Ross said. "I don't think it affected the outcome. We played as hard or not harder without those guys because we had to even to be able to compete here."
Edison (9-2) broke a 6-6 tie in the second quarter on touchdown runs of 5 and 42 yards by Arseo Lakey to take a 21-6 lead with 2:08 left before halftime. Crespi responded less than a minute later to close within 21-13 on a 61-yard touchdown by Shanks with 1:08 to play.
Matt Gray finished 3 of 8 for 59 yards, 47 coming on a pass to Shanks on Crespi's first possession.
