Coach Jeremiah Ross is putting together a football schedule that will let him and his Encino Crespi players help decide who's the No. 1 running back in Southern California.

"We should have a good gauge of it," said Ross, whose Celts will open the season on Aug. 31 at home against City Section champion Lake Balboa Birmingham and its standout running back, Milton Knox, the reigning City Section player of the year.

For their next game, they are negotiating to play Newhall Hart, which features All-Southern Section running back Delano Howell. Then they play host to Corona Centennial and All-Southern Section running back Ryan Bass. After a week off, they will play host to Ventura St. Bonaventure and another All-Southern Section running back, Darrell Scott, who recently transferred from Moorpark.

In Week 5, Crespi will play at state Division I bowl champion Canyon Country Canyon, but won't have to face running back J.J. DiLuigi, who will have graduated in June.

"Our guys love competition," Ross said of scheduling so many strong teams for nonleague games.

The Celts' game against Hart is contingent on St. Bonaventure finding a replacement on its schedule for Hart, which informed St. Bonaventure last month that it wants to break the final year of a two-year contract.

Ross has his own top running backs in Austin Shanks and E.J. Woods.
