Cal’s major recruiting weekend reaped big rewards as the Bears received the first in a series of commitments on Sunday as they hosted a total of 18 players in Berkeley.

6-2/235 4 star Crespi (CA) High School linebacker D.J. Holt gave Cal coaches the word last night that he was committing to Cal.
“I just had a talk with Coach Tedford today during my visit with my parents that I wanted to be a Bear,” said Holt. “He just smiled. He seemed real happy.”

"DJ just made his decision on the spot," said Holt's father, Shawn Bridges. "He really likes the school a lot, too, so it's not just a football decision."

"If DJ didn't play football, he'd still have the opportunity to get a great education," added Holt's mother, Monica. "We're very happy for him."

Holt was certain of his decision to commit to Cal by the time it came to head back home to Encino.

“I made my decision for Cal because that was the situation I felt most comfortable with,” said Holt. “The academics played a good role for me, too.”

“I’m really comfortable with all the coaches and the players have nothing but good things to say about working with them.”

Holt was hosted by a player many are reminded of when they watch Holt play, Cal linebacker Worrell Williams. Both are compact, big-hitting defenders.

One area where they differ is where they play on the line. Holt is slated to be a Mike, manning the middle linebacker position in the Bears 4-3 defense.

As a junior, Holt was the CIF Division V Defensive Player of the year, compiling 73 tackles and 10 sacks. As a senior, Holt led his Crespi squad with 72 tackles and 12 sacks.

The 4 star Holt is the 13th-rated strongside linebacker in the country by Scout.com. Holt was the first linebacker commit for the Class of ’07 for Cal
